“Mandalas” Abstract Psychedelic and somewhat Visionary Art for those who are taking a more circular path to higher ground. Dream Tripping in the Garden with Henry and Marge.

This from the good folks at Wikipedia…

Mandala (Sanskrit: मण्डल Maṇḍala, ‘circle’) is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the Universe.[1]The basic form of most mandalas is a square with four gates containing a circle with a center point. Each gate is in the general shape of a T.[2][3] Mandalas often exhibit radial balance.[4]

The term is of Hindu origin. It appears in the Rig Veda as the name of the sections of the work, but is also used in other Indian religions, particularly Buddhism.

In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of aspirants and adepts, as a spiritual teaching tool, for establishing a sacred space, and as an aid to meditation and trance induction.

In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmosmetaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.

Hmmmm? Interesting stuff and while I wouldn’t say that the following art work conforms to all of the above regarding mandalas, they are to me, quite mandala-esque. And damn trippy at times too, lol. And as far as being somewhat visionary, well I suppose they’re that too. I’m not that big on categories when it comes to art, especially my own, lol. But it certainly falls into the big bucket marked “abstract”. I just find labels and categories, while nice for our categorical minds, to be rather limiting. But we humans do like to put things in specific boxes for the most part. Hell, so many of us live or lives inside of boxes of some type. But those are other thoughts for other times. For now, let’s just dive into some symbolic microcosms of the universe and perhaps engage in a little meditation or trance inducing visual stimulation…

"NE STPNSTN 1B" is a psychedelic visionary abstract art work that in many ways resembles a mandala. Well, that's what the story is and we're sticking to it. ©2013 Sacred Square Art and Design.

Now some of you may disagree with my thoughts on this being a mandala, and that’s perfectly okay, but I see the curving lines surrounding that center in a very mandala like way. Certainly not anything traditional, but then again, you didn’t arrive here looking for traditional, did you? “Marge, that’s a damn fine mandala.” “No Henry, it is not a mandala at all. I’m beginning to think this whole spiritual quest you’ve dragged me on is nothing more than a sham. I mean really, does this look anything like the nice, slick marketing brochure we sent away for? No it does not!”

And our next contestant on “Is That A Mandala?” is….

"NE POTS 3A" is definitely a mandala and a psychedelic abstract art work from the visionary minds of those mad fools at Sacred Square Art and Design. ©2013

“Now damn it Marge, that’s a mandala!” “I’m not sure Henry, it doesn’t have all the correct aspects of a classic mandala as defined by the stuff we read at the top of this post.” “Marge, don’t get hung up on correct. We’re on a spiritual quest here and didn’t that shaman say that the key to any spiritual quest, much less full blown activation of the crown chakra, is to have an open mind?” “I know Henry, but that shaman looked an awful lot like Daffy Duck and besides, where is that tour guide we were promised in the brochure?”  “Marge, Marge, Margie…. let go of that shit and just stare into the abyss with me. Look at that blackness in the center… have you ever seen anything more black? I mean, my god, that is serious blackness if I’ve ever seen it. And besides, you know what Pete and Diane said about this place, how it sure put some spice back in their love life…”

Well now, let’s just leave Henry and Marge for a moment and consider our next contestant….

"NE PINO 1C" is also a mandala. Why? Because we said it was! Abstract visionary and psychedelic art work and image by Sacred Square Art and Design, a true authority when it comes to mandalas. ©2013

“Henry! Henry!” “What? What’s the matter Margie?” “There is no way that’s a mandala! No way! It’s too… too… packed and crammed with stuff… my brains overloading and my visual cortex is about to burst open!” “Marge! Baby! That’s great! You’re in it, baby. Ride it out! Go with it!” “Jesus Henry! Ride it out? Ride it out? I’m freaking the hell out and you’re just standing there smiling and telling me to ride it out while my core beliefs and world views are crumbling like stale Saltines over the tomato soup of the meaning of my entire life?” “Oh! Lucky you! You must be having a vision, like the one in the brochure! Oh Marge, I am so happy for you. I mean really, I’m a bit jealous too…” “Damn it Henry… hold onto my hand… I feel like I’m dissolving into nothingness for god’s sake! This is not the trip I paid for!”

Well, things certainly seem to be going well with Henry and Marge, so let’s look at this variation on contestant #1…. and yes, this is a damn mandala… or maybe not.

"NE STPNSTN 1C" is certainly a mandala. In fact it is certified by the True Authority Board of Mandalas which is located somewhere mystical and meaningful like Tibet or Gary, Indiana. Psychedelic abstract visionary art work and image by Sacred Square Art and Design. ©2013.

“Relax Margie… relax… breathe, yeah, c;mon baby, breathe… just like that Baba Ram Yum something said… yeah, that’s it baby… there, feel better?” “Oh Henry… Henry… I can’t explain it… but now… I know… I just know Henry… we’re all just so… small… and insignificant… and.. and…” “Oh Margie… I love you…”

As is always the case, your thoughts, mad ramblings, insincere apologies and insights are most welcome here at The Square. So share yourself.

Yours in the never ending search…
