Another set of three works from the last round of spray blasting. Two are the same, just a variation in the digital manipulations that produced the differences. The third is a direct result of the new colors being used. Trippy? Yes. Psychedelic? Quite so. But what about this “New Tribal” thing? Well it’s actually the result of a few things and various conversations with my son, who is 22, and certainly a psychedelic traveler plugged into the worlds of raving candy kids, new bluegrass freaks and jam band psychedelica.
In one way it is my roots. No, I’m not Native American, at least in any real and discernible way, but I am certainly tribal. Tribal art, be it African, Australian, South or North American, has always exerted an influence on me. The patterns of the textiles of North American and African peoples. The masks of all. The Mayan pictographic language fascinated me and was inspiration for early spray blast experiments more than a decade ago. Sculpture and architecture, especially from South and Central America were also an influence. The art and cultures are bold. And also deep.
The new psychedelic tribe of youth culture that is experimenting and experiencing lsd, mushrooms, mescaline and other mind expanders, is also an influence. There’s a new generation of seekers and they are both making and taking high quality psychedelics. And this is not a localized thing. It’s a worldwide thing. Acid is coming back from the home and birthplace of lsd, Switzerland. There is a decidedly 1960’s feel to this scene. People looking and seeking for truths and answers. People opening to a higher consciousness. Losing their fears and finding their hearts. Their loving nature. It’s a very cool thing to see.
And hopefully, so are these… lol. Here’s “LIGHT”…
Could have called it Breakfast At The Psychedelic Cafe… Eggs over easy… or perhaps sunny side up. Love the offset of those hot colors giving away to the blues and grey purples. For me there’s a face in the center and some delicious texture in the outlying areas. Hmmmm… I just had a thought that these things would make for some damn interesting blotter sheets,,,, 🙂
Opposites attract? Maybe, but I think it’s simply that they co-exist. A needed balance. Both have their enchantments. They have their beguiling qualities. I love the way the detail changes between the two pieces. New things emerging as other things obscure. Love these two together.
And here’s something different, “SCARAB”…
Bold colors. Blues, greens, reds, oranges, yellows…. Love the details in the center areas. Electric Giza. Pharaohs talking to the stars and listening for answers. Well, at least that’s the dream I get. Your results may vary.
Enjoy and as always, your opinions, comments, and well thought irreverent jabber is welcome and encouraged. As I’ve said before, the staff here at The Square is always excited and just plain jacked up to hear from the outside world. So please, share ’em if you have them.
Yours in pursuing the creative possibility otherwise known as life,
P.S. To the girl who means the world to me, rock on Baby Strange… rock on.
